Yes! SickKids has a strong tradition of hiring new graduates. Our comprehensive orientation program prepares you to practice confidently in our acute-care pediatric environment.

Yes! We accept temporary class licenses until you complete the RN registration exam and transition to a permanent role as a "New Grad Clinician."

SickKids offers one of Ontario’s most robust orientations for new nursing graduates. You'll have paid protected time for three months for learning and training via:

  • Instructor-led classroom activities
  • Hands-on interactive sessions and skills labs
  • Clinical and simulation experiences
  • Specialized unit-based orientation with an Interprofessional Education Specialist
  • Preceptor-supervised shifts in patient care

Yes! Clinical rotations and experience in hospital-based settings with direct patient care, including volunteer or work experience with children, are valuable assets at SickKids.

Staffing ratios vary by unit, patient acuity, and staff experience levels, ensuring appropriate care for pediatric patients and their families.

SickKids supports continuous learning and professional development with: 

  • Tuition support for graduate studies

Nurses at SickKids use self-scheduling to choose shifts that suit their needs, approved by unit managers to ensure coverage and preferences are met.

Yes! We welcome nurses at all career stages, offering opportunities for learning and growth in paediatric specialties.

We tailor orientation based on your experience, supporting your transition into paediatric practice. Your previous experience serves as a foundation for specialties such as critical care, oncology, or emergency care.

Experienced RNs new to SickKids participate in the same central nursing orientation along with all new nurses and unit-specific orientation to ensure success.

At SickKids, the Nursing Resource Group (NRG) supports staff development within home units, offering flexibility in FTE and opportunities to specialize after orientation. SickKids does not hire into a centralized float pool but offers NRG positions post-orientation. NRG staff have guaranteed FTE and flexibility to support unit-specific needs and career development.

Yes, SickKids offers dedicated rental housing accommodations for all new SickKids professional staff. Learn more about the Alan Brown Building and fill out the application form to apply.

Meet Chantel, Connected Care

As a Connected Care nurse at SickKids, Chantel educates parents, caregivers and homecare providers on how to care for children at home once they’ve been discharged from the hospital. Learn more about her role and what it’s like to be a nurse at SickKids.

SickKids is the first paediatric Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO) in Canada, and has been a BPSO since 2009. We continue to integrate Best Practice Guidelines using collaborative and inter-professional approaches. Over 20 Best Practice Guidelines have been implemented at SickKids.
